Major Associated Injuries of Cervical Spine Fractures
Abstract
A total of 28 cases of cervical spine fractures with major associated injuries between January. 1991 and December, 1993 were analyzed. Motro vehicle accidents were responsible for 19 cases. Twelve patients were admitted with complete
myelopathies.
8
patients had incomplete myelopathies. 57% of the patients had major associated head injuries including skull and facial fractures, cerebral contusion and intracranial clots, 39% of the patients had thoracic injuries, such as rib fractures,
hemo-and
pneumothoraces, pulmonary contusions, cardiac contusions. Abdominal injuries and pelvic injuries were documented in 25%. Major extremity fractures occurred in 21%. Noncervical spine fractures were 14%.
The severity and range of potential major associated injuries underscore the need for meticulous primary evaluation and for repeated, systematic reevaluation of patients after acute cervical spine fractures.
